Memandangkan pelajar-pelajar di bawah BASS akan menduduki peperiksaan akhir semester 2, 2011, maka sebagai salah satu insiatif utama kita bagi mendapat kejayaan dan mendapat berkah dengan ilmu-ilmu yang kita pelajari, dalami dan ketahui ialah dengan memohon keberkataan dan petunjuk dari Ilahi. Semoga apa yang kita pelajari selama ini dapat bermanfat bukan sahaja bagi diri kita, bahkan bagi ugama, Negara dan Bangsa yang tercinta.

Maka seperti tahun-tahun sebelum ini, adalah menjadi kebiasaan bagi warga BASS untuk mengadakan Sembahyang Hajat beramai-ramai. Majlis Sembahyang Hajat warga BASS akan diadakan selepas Sembahyang Maghrib berjemaah dan juga akan diteruskan dengan membaca Surah Yaasin beramai-ramai. Details bagi majlis tersebut adalah seperti berikut:

Raya for Bruneians Around Sydney Society (BASS)

Being away from home does not stop Bruneians studying in Sydney from celebrating a joyful Raya this year.

Dk Nurul Aqilah Pg Masuni, a second year student at University of New South Wales, stated that the Raya atmosphere here in Sydney is “better than she had expected.”

“On my mind, celebrating Raya outside the country feels depressing because your family is not around but looking at what I’ve been going through so far this Raya, it has been fun, joyful and more happening than I expected for here your friends become your new family.”

On 10^th September, a group of fourteen students travelled by road for six hours from Sydney to Brunei High Commission in Canberra to attend an open house organised by the Bruneian officers.

“The trip to Canberra was part of the climax of our Raya. Meeting the elderly and some Bruneian officers who were very welcoming made it feel like home. We even got to eat some Bruneian dishes that we have been craving,” added Dk Nurul Aqilah.

On the other hand, Abdul Anas Mohammad Ishak, has a different opinion about his first Raya here in Sydney.

“My first day of Raya was quiet. Eventhough I feel happy to celebrate Raya in Australia with my BASS family, at the same time I feel sad because I am not with my real family. The raya here is not as happening because there are not many open houses to be attended. There are also less ‘duit raya’, less ‘tapak kuda’ and less ‘kuih raya’. “

The second year Chemical Engineering student also added that he could not get the real feel of Raya when in Sydney.

“There is no raya atmosphere here because for me, the highlight of raya is to ask for forgiveness from other people especially our parents. However, this year, I did not get to do that.”

Mohd Yusri Efandi Ibrahim, a third year Petroleum Engineering student said that last year’s Raya was much better than this year’s.

“Raya so far is just okay, not as great as in Brunei. On the first day, I could not attend the mass Sunat Eid prayer because I had a presentation at the same time. Compared to last year, the first week of raya fell during our mid-semester break, but not this year. Last year we could have a gathering after Sunat prayer, but this year, we could only have it on the third day of Raya. I feel that the raya atmosphere is really missing this year, even during the BASS takbir raya gathering.”

Yusri also compared his Raya celebration in Brunei and in Sydney, saying that raya feels like normal days here.

“In Brunei, the night before raya, we would be busy doing preparation. Cleaning up the house, fixing the neon lights, ‘pelita’…. These things do not happen here. My hope for next Raya is that on the first day, we could have a gathering and help each other to make that day the most important day out of the 365 days that we have in a year.”

It is a different story for Md Zarifdana Zinal Abadin, a fourth year student in Petroleum Engineering, who has “mixed feelings” about celebrating his final Raya in Sydney.

“I feel sad because it is my last Raya here but I am kind of happy at the same time for I’ll be in Brunei next year, Insha Allah.”

He also talked about celebrating Raya at Brunei High Commission in Canberra.

“The food was great and I got to meet more Bruneians there and it felt as if I was in Brunei.”

When asked about what Raya in Sydney has taught him, the 21-year-old has learnt to appreciate his family’s presence.

”I would like to spend and cherish more time with my family when I come back to Brunei because I have been missing them during Raya here. But I will definitely miss the people in Sydney.”

Untuk meraikan kemenangan kita menempuhi bulan ramadhan dalam membina iman & taqwa, BASS ingin menjemput semua warga Islam BASS untuk beramai-ramai menghadirkan diri untuk sambutan malam Hari Raya Aidilfitri 1432H, pada besok hari pada jam 8 malam. Bertempat di kediaman kaka miza, 9/29 Forsyth Street.

Sambutan Hari Raya akan dimulakan dengan takbir raya melahirkan rasa Kebesaran Ilahi. Lafaz takbir raya akan disediakan. Untuk memeriahkan lagi suasana setiap rumah bolehlah sekiranya membawa juadah ringan seperti biskut, kek dan sebagainya.

First and foremost, we would like thank those who attended the Majlis Pembukaan Bertadarrus Al-Quran Bass 1432/2011and the Majlis bersungkai, for the overwhelming support to participate in this first-ever Majlis Bertadarrus event by BASS.

Alhamdulilah, the night turned out very well. We had opportunity to spend time and listen to a sharing session presented by our Sister, Nurul Ain, about Ramadhan Al-Karim and its benefits. The night ended with Terawih and Witir prayer lead by Md Zarif.

Back to the actual intention of this post. Please kindly find the attached list of Juzuk-Juzuk to be recited and completed by all participants before the Majlis Khatam Al-Quran BASS which insya Allah will be held on 20th August 2011.

An update on Majlis bertadarrus AL-Quran BASS

Assalamualaikum and Hello,

This is an update regarding to the Majlis Tadarus Al-Quran BASS on this Saturday. Due to some issue, we have to change the venue for the Majlis Tahlil and the opening of the Majlis Bertadarus from Old Tote to the village boys apartment. The agenda on that day remain unchanged.

However, the location for the Majlis bersungkai (eating session) remains unchanged at Old Tote (starts at 6.00pm) and again it is a potluck and it is open to all BASS family members, (Muslim/non Muslim).

And just a quick reminder, the closing time for the registration to participate in the Majlis Tadarus Al-Quran BASS will be closed on this Friday evening. Please refer to the previous post for details...

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah dan Salam sejahtera.

Sebagaimana yang telah dimaklumkan sebelum ini Majlis Tadarrus Al-Quran akan dibuka secara rasminya pada hari Sabtu, 13 hb Ogos 2011, bertempat di Old Tote, UNSW.

Agenda yang akan berlangsung pada hari tersebut adalah seperti berikut:

3.30pm - Semua ahli BASS dijangka hadir.

4.00pm - Majlis bertahlil dimulakan.

4.30pm - Pembukaan rasmi Majlis Tadarrus beramai-ramai.

5.24pm - Majlis Berbuka Puasa secara ringan.

5.40pm - Solat Maghrib berjema'ah.

6.00pm - Menikmati juadah yang dihidangkan.

7.00pm - Solat 'Isya berjema'ah diteruskan dengan Solat Sunat Terawih dan Witr.

8.00pm - Majlis dijangka selesai.

Oleh kerana majlis ini adalah majlis rasmi, semua peserta adalah digalakkan memakai baju melayu /Jubah (lelaki) dan perempuan (baju kurong atau jubah) dan sahabat yang non-muslim berpakaian formal (formal attire).

3) Peserta boleh menghabiskan juzuk2 yang diberikan secara peseorangan/kumpulan, mengikut kehendak masing2. tetapi sebagai syarat bagi majlis ini, setiap peserta Khatam Al-Quran akan di tasmi' (disemak) bacaannya oleh Mohd Zarif (bagi peserta lelaki) dan Nurul Ain (bagi peserta perempuan) sekurang-kurangnya sekali dalam tempoh Tadarus tersebut.

Majlis Tadarus AL-Quran bagi warga Bass

Bismillah Ar-rahman Ar-Rahim,

Assalamualaikum and Ramadhan karim..

Sebagai sebahagian dari ibadah kita di bulan ramadhan ini, pihak AJK BASS ingin mengendalikan majlis pengkhataman Al-Quran di bulan Ramadhan ini. Dibukakan pada semua umat islam Brunei di Sydney. Majlis pembukaan khatam Al-Quran akan diadakan pada hari sabtu 13hb Ogos, selepas sungkai bersama solat terawih berjemaah. Majlis penyungkaian adalah bertemakan (potluck).

*untuk pengkhataman Al-Quran, 30 juzuk akan dibahagikan kepada jumlah perserta yang mengikuti program ini. Bacaan boleh dibuat secara persendirian dalam satu tempoh yang akan ditetapkan kemudian. Peserta lelaki dan perempuan akan dibahagikan untuk penyemakkan (tasmi') bacaan Al-quran.

Penyemakkan akan dibuat oleh Zarif (untuk lelaki) & Nurul Ain Abu Bakar (untuk perempuan).. Peserta boleh berkonsultasi memilih masa & hari penyemakkan dengan kedua-dua penyemak. Penyemakkan akan didengar beberapa muka surat sahaja.

Marilah kita bersama-masa menghidupkan ramadhan dengan keindahan kitab Allah. Rasulullah bersabda; “Orang yang membaca Al Quran dan dia pandai membacanya maka (nanti di akhirat akan dikumpulkan) bersama para malaikat yang mulia, sedangkan orang yang membaca Al Quran dan dia terbata-bata karenanya serta kesusahan maka baginya dua pahala “ (Muttafaq alaih) - ertinya bacaan orang yang pandai membaca Al-quran satu pahala. Orang yang membaca tergagap-gagap pula dua pahala; satu pahalanya kerana keinginannya untuk membaca walaupun terhenti-henti dan satu pahala lagi kerana membaca Al-quran.

Bismillahi rahmani rahim..

Assalamualaikum warahmatullah kakak-abang-adik

Pertama sekali, Selamat Menyambut Bulan Ramadhan.

Alhamdulillah, satu nikmat yang besar, Allah panjangkan umur untuk bertemu lagi di Bulan Ramadhan untuk tahun ini. Mungkin saja ajal sudah menjemput, tapi Allah bagi chance lagi untuk menambah amalan, apalagi ganjaran amal ibadat dan kebaikan akan dilipat gandakan... Allah dah janji, bukan saya yang bual kosong ;p syaratnya; niat adalah inginkan Allah redha.

Jangan tak sahur pulak. Sahur tu ada keberkatannya. Dan lagi elok kalau sahur tu kita meriahkan dengan zikir, solat sunat tahajjud dan banyak-banyak berdoa. Pasal ketika waktu beginilah doa kita sangat dekat dengan Allah. Allah akan turun ke tingkat langit yang paling rendah untuk mengabulkan rayuan dan permohonan hambaNya.
Ditanya kepada Nabi (oleh seorang sahabat) : Wahai Rasulullah :" Waktu bilakah doa paling didengari (oleh Allah s.w.t) ; jawab Nabi : Pada hujung malam (waktu sahur) dan selepas solat fardhu" (Riwayat At-Tirmidzi)

Dalam kita berpuasa, jangalah pulak kita ambil kesempatan, tidur banyak, tak buat homework, tak dirikan solat fardhu. orang islam itu sepatutnya bijak mengatur masa dan bijak bertindak. Jangan beralasan, kalau berani nak buat jugak, beralasanlah dengan Allah. HOHO~~ "Apabila masuk Ramadhan, pintu-pintu syurga akan di buka, di tutup pintu-pintu neraka dan syaitan-syaitan di gari." [HR Al-Bukhari] Iblis dibelenggu, tinggal nafsu kita saja lagi yang memujuk membuat benda sia-sia. So, watch out haha.

Dan ketika berbuka / bersungkai, jangan lupa untuk menadahkan tangan berdoa sebanyak yang mungkin pasal ketika itulah jugak doa kita sangat makbul. "Sesungguhnya bagi orang berpuasa itu, ketika berbuka (atau hampir berbuka) doa yang tidak akan ditolak" (Riwayat Ibn Majah)

*Doakan ibubapa dan keluarga serta kawan-kawan, semoga segala dosa diluputkan dan amalan diterima. Jangan hanya letih dan lapar berpuasa tapi amalan ditolak. Sama-sama kita berjuang cemerlang hidup di dunia dan tidak kecundang hidup yang lebih kekal di sana, akhirat*

Pengumuman Awal Ramadhan bagi tahun 1432/2011

Assalamualaikum W.B.T

Dengan sukacitanya dimaklumkan kepada semua warga BASS yang berugama Islam bahawa awal Ramadhan 1432 Hijrah bagi kawasan University of NSW telah pun disabitkan jatuh pada petang , Ahad, 31hb Julai 2011.

Maka dengan ini distiharkan bahawa warga Islam di UNSW akan mula berpuasa pada hari Isnin, 01hb Ogos 2011. Perkara ini telahpun dimaklumkan oleh Pegawai Islam ISOC (Islamic Society of UNSW), Mahmoud Jaame' selepas Sembahyang Fardhu Jumaat yang lepas dan juga melalui makluman dari pihak Suruhjaya Brunei di Canberra.

Dengan bermulanya awal Ramadhan pada 31hb Julai bagi tahun ini, Insya Allah, Sembahyang Terawih bagi Muslim dan Muslimah di University of NSW akan dilaksanakan seperti berikut:

BASS gathering - Semester 2, 2011

Assalamualaikum / Hello,

First of all, let us welcome everyone back here in Sydney for the beginning of the 2nd semester of 2011. As everyone would have notice by now that there are 24 new undergraduates (12 PE and 12 CE) from ITB joining us starting this semester (we are growing bigger......xD ).

Like what we have been doing as part of the BASS's 'culture', we will be having a pot-luck gathering to welcome the newcomers and also to mark the beginning of a new semester (although its the 2nd week oredi....=p)
There will be gold coin donationre the better....=D )

Some guidelines and information for new BASS members

New Petroleum and Chemical Engineering Students 2011

Assalamualaikum and Hello

Foremost, we would like to say Congratulations to those who are on the verge of coming to Sydney. We are so happy to announce that our BASS family is growing bigger yearly and this July, Insya Allah another 24 new students are coming to UNSW for Petroleum and Chemical Engineering courses.

Here are some guidelines and information prepared for the new BASS members.

What to bring to Sydney?

Basically Sydney offers and is able to provide most of our needed items at an affordable price. Therefore, it is not necessary to bring a year of such supply to Sydney. Just bring some necessary things such as few thick clothes, Indomie (you will miss them very soon :) ) and most importantly photocopies of your Visa, passports, IC, Sponsorship letters and etc which will be needed for house application. Not to forget your Hari Raya clothes.

What NOT to bring to Sydney?

Since Australia is one of the largest food suppliers, therefore in order to control the quality of foods as well as to prevent any food/animals diseases in the country, the Australian Government has taken a step to control the entrance of several foods, animals and plants products from outside Australia. Therefore you are required to declare on arrival to AQIS of any dairy, animals or plants products to the country. This includes some Kueh, Teas, dried or fresh fruits and etc. The full list of the foods that are required to be declared are available at http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/travel/entering-australia/cant-take. If you are not really sure if the items you are bringing along are under quarantine or not, just declared it. This also includes any used foot wears (soil/sands/plant might sticks on it)

Calculator

Halal Foods / Asian Foods

Alhamdulilah, It is not that difficult to find halal foods and restaurants in Sydney. So you don’t have to worry much on this. List of halal butchery can be found at http://www.msda.org.au/web_images/halal%20helpline%20butcher.pdf.

There are oriental shops selling Asian foods (Jasmine white rice, rendang paste, satay powder, fried rice paste and etc ) are easily available at Kingsford and Randwick.

Accomodation

The current bass members will provide you with the temporary accommodation while you are still looking for your accommodation. Besides that your humble seniors :) will help and guide you how to apply and inspect a unit/property. List of the top 3 famous websites are as follows

Bandar Seri Begawan - The career opportunities for petroleum engineering graduates are bright. Many students are taking advantage of the strong partnership between the Institut Teknologi Brunei and the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia.

Nadiah Haji Mohd Ya'ani, 20, and Azimah Jofri, 20, are both second year UNSW petroleum engineering students, sponsored by Brunei Shell Petroleum.

Arriving at UNSW can be a rollercoaster ride for students. Many students are excited to be a part of their new surroundings, however for many; it is their first experience living away from home.

Azimah says, "I am very family oriented - I was very homesick in the beginning."

UNSW offers many mentoring and peer support schemes to help with the transition. Azimah and Naidah are personally guided by Dr Yildiray Cinar, Senior Lecturer in Petroleum Engineering.

Additional support is offered through UNSW Student Development International (SDI). SDI assists international students with services from airport pick up to assistance with housing.

Shell-sponsored student, Ak Muhd Amal Nur Qasman Metussin, 22, was part of the first group of ITB Petroleum Engineering students to join the ranks at UNSW.

Qasman lives in the recently completed UNSW Village with six other students, mostly fellow compatriots from Brunei.

In addition to the convenience of living on campus and the proximity to his classes, Qasman also enjoys the "good facilities (including) study rooms and fast Internet connection".
There are plenty of facilities for students at UNSW.

Naidah says, "For me, everything is here. Even if I'm not on campus, everything is online." Naidah is referring to the My UNSW portal, where students can access their notes, assignments and even interact with other students.

The extended opening hours of UNSW's world class library are a definite advantage for Azimah, as studying without the distractions of home increases her concentration.

Azimah and Naidah live in Randwick, just five minutes from the university.

Azimah says, "It's a good place to stay. It's safe and quiet."

The beachside suburb Coogee is also just minutes away, and the girls like to visit the beach when they are not busy studying.

Yusri Efandi Ibrahim, 23, lives in the nearby suburb of Kingsford.

He says living in an area as diverse as Kingsford has definite advantages, one of which is the availability of good quality, Halal food in the area.

"I wasn't expecting to find that in Sydney!" Yusri says.

Yusni began his career in Bruneian bank before assessing his future prospects and deciding to instead study petroleum engineering. Indeed, UNSW alumni enjoy challenging and successful careers around the globe.

Petroleum engineering graduates command excellent starting salaries between A$60,000 and A$110,000, and it is common for graduates to progress quickly through company ranks.

With so many opportunities awaiting hard-working UNSW graduates, Naidah offers some sage advice: "Always remember what your priorities are, study hard, but once in a while, remember to do something fun for you."

Greetings from the Brunei Australia Association! For and on behalf of BAA I would like to inform you that we will be hosting an Annual Dinner on 25th June 2011 at the i-Lotus restaurant. The highlight of dinner would be on the Recognition of Top Bruneian Graduates and Scholars in Australia by the local Australian universityrepresentatives.

In this regard, we would like to invite The Bruneians Around Sydney Society to become part of this dinner program by providing us a short video clip (5 minutes) of Bruneian students saying "Gudday Brunei!" from Sydney . You may creatively add-on to the clip. Perhaps shoot a short video on what it's like to be a Bruneian student in Sydney. Existing video clips or slide shows featuring your student activities in Sydney will be good as well.

New Bass President and Committee 2011/2012 announcement

Salam/Hello to all:

Congratulations to Azimah Jofri for being selected as the BASS president 2011/2012. Quickly following her is Adrian Boon who was selected as the vice president. Both were out of words but did manage to express on how thankful they are to be selected and they were looking forward to how this year will pan out with of course the help of the new BASS committee and the BASS society itself. Speaking of the new BASS committee, there are the five new focal points whom will work together with both the president and the vice president in matters concerning the well being of the students here in Sydney and the activities that will be held from this day onwards.

Not forgetting the freshly retired president and his vice president, Abu Zahrin and Zarif, we asked from them on how they feel about the new reign. They responded well by saying that the new committee will do just fine, with God’s willing.

It was a night filled with food, laughter, and more food. We would like to thank Ms. Idariani Damit for attending our humble gathering, to Abu for organizing the Solat Hajat in correspondence to the ever-impending (for some, it had already impended) exams and to the society itself for responding positively to this event. On behalf of the committee, we wish you all to eat well, sleep well, study smart and ace those exams! Salam and….

Duas for studies and exams

Assalamualaikum and Hello.

On behalf of Bass Committee, we would like to wish everyone ALL THE BEST for your exams.

Please practice a healthy lifestyle during the exam period. Make sure you have enough sleep especially the night before your exam and don't take too much caffeine or energy drinks! :)

I believe by now everyone has started doing revision for the upcoming exams. Last Sunday, we performed Sunnat Hajat Prayer and hopefully Allah will bless us and grant us success in our exams and life, Amin. Insya Allah.

In preparing for our exams, here are some Duas to be recited by Muslims/Muslimah in hoping for help and guidance from Allah, Insya Allah.

1. Doa sebelum belajar : (supaya dimudahkan memahami dan hafalan):

“ Ya Allah, bukakanlah pintu hati kami sebagaimana orang-orang yang arif , Kurniakanlah kepada kami kefahaman Nabi-Nabi dan ilham para Malaikat yang hampir dengan-Mu, dengan Rahmat-Mu Wahai Tuhan Yang Maha Pemurah Lagi Maha Penyayang. ”

2. Doa Selepas Belajar : (supaya apa yang dipelajari tidak lupa)

“ Ya Allah, aku pertaruhkan kepada-Mu apa yang telah Engkau ajarkan kepadaku, maka kembalikanlah semula kepadaku jika aku memerlukannya dan janganlah Engkau buat aku melupainya, Wahai Tuhan Yang Sekalian Alam. ”

3. Doa supaya Dijauhkan Dari Sifat Sedih,Malas, Bakhil, Pengecut & dikelilingi hutang:

“ Ya Allah, sesungguhnya aku berlindung pada-Mu dari rasa sedih gelisah dan aku berlindung pada-Mu dari sifat lemah dan malas, dan aku berlindung pada-Mu dari sikap pengecut dan bakhil, dan aku berlindung pada-Mu dari cengkaman hutang dan penindasan orang (aniaya). ”

4. Doa ketika menghadapi kesusahan dalam peperiksaan atau kehidupan:

Ertinya : “Ya Allah, tiada yang mudah kecuali sesuatu yang Engkau mudahkan dan Engkau lah yang menjadikan yang susah itu mudah”

Tata tertib seorang Islam dalam menuntut Ilmu

Niat menuntut ilmu hendaklah semata-mata kerana Allah, Rasulullah bersabda

“ Sesiapa yang menuntut ilmu kerana selain daripada Allah SWT ataupun menghendaki menuntut ilmu (sebaliknya) selain daripada Allah SWT, maka disediakan tempat duduknya daripada neraka." [Hadis Riwayat Tarmizi]

· Dari mula pembelajaran sehingga tamat peperiksaan hingga ketika menunggu keputusan, pergantunggan (Tawakkal kepada Allah) perlu ada, kerana semua Ilmu itu adalah kepunyaan Allah yang boleh ditarik bila-bila masa sahaja.

· Redha dengan apa pun jua keputusan selepas peperiksaan, kerana semuanya itu adalah takdir dan ketetapan Allah. Allah melihat pada kesungguhan usaha hambaNya, tidak semestinya pada Keputusan akhirnya.

Next Presidency

One more thing, the time has come to change the presidency of the BASS society. The following names have been selected to take over the current mature and "cute" Ketua Kampung, Abu Z. This selection is based on their contribution for BASS.

Adrian, JJ, Nadine, Kayden, Nabila Msooni, Yusri and Zahra.

Congratulations guys and sisters. So everyone, please do vote for your next President. Also, the president must have good decision making skills, must be responsible, has good communication and be the role model for BASS.

And for the new President, do not worry too much, because the current KK and vice-president will help you in any matters relating to BASS. Ok, the decision is now in your hands.

The highest vote will be the President and second highest vote will be the Vice-President. Also, the next task for new President is to elect his/her treasurer, secretary, public relations or IT for BASS. Please vote using the voting poll below. Raves for authentic Nasi Katok in Sydney - BB publication

Yeeee.... What a fantabulous report Nadine :) ! Once again thanks to all Bass-ians for making this become a reality...

The night kicked off pretty quickly last Thursday, 12^th May 2011 at the ‘Pasar Malam’ event. It was held by the Malaysian society at the roundhouse at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. The chatter of excitement, the sizzle of food on freshly hot pans, the flicker of assorted neon lights; if it wasn’t for the cold autumn breeze, the atmosphere was similar to the sights and sounds of a regular night at Pasar Malam, Gadong. And instead of the usual role of being served, the 2^nd year Bruneians students who are taking petroleum and chemical engineering turned into pseudo-savvy stall owners named ‘Garai Tekidum’, selling food exclusively close to home.

We had our hands full; some were tending to the continuous queues of customers, some were cooking behind the scenes while others entertained those who came to the stalls with fun facts about Brunei. Trying to stay true to the local favourites, the menu consisted of the humble Nasi Katok, Nasi Sambal Pusu, chicken dumplings, Kuih Bingka, Kuih Apam and the increasingly popular fried banana popia rolls. The food was sold off fairly quickly especially the Nasi Katok and Kuih Bingka which were gone within an hour’s time. As the night progressed, the crowds maintained and it felt good to know that the food we offered were attractive enough to keep them coming back for more. A few commented on the relatively inexpensive prices that we had compared to other stalls. This was because we knew the main objective of setting up the stall was to introduce a bit of Brunei through the food and language.

The current BASS (Bruneians around Sydney society) Ketua Kampong, Abu Zahrin, commented

“ Alhamdulilah, the service was marvelous and the authentic foods such as Nasi Katok and Nasi Pusu were very welcoming which even myself couldn’t get one. I am really thankful and glad that we have made it. Finally it was one of the big achievements for BASS to promote Brunei in a foreign country”

One of the customers, Henri Baz said:

“I was there too late for the Nasi Katok and heard they sold like hot cakes. But one of the Bruneian sisters recommended me the Nasi Pusu, which I have to say was really good. Now I regret buying only one portion instead of five. The banana rolls were really good too! “

It was a great milestone for BASS to participate in such an event for the first time and to succeed in our mission. All the profit acquired was put into organizing future Bruneian gatherings and activities. Through this event, we hope we made a positive impact in introducing our Brunei, our culture to the world and we look forward to represent our country at other events hopefully in the near future.

We really really appreciate everyone of you for helping out Garai Tekidum that day at the Malaysian Festival. Without you guys, i don't think we can cope with the situation of both cooking and promoting our authentic Bruneian food. i know all of you must be wondering if we make a profit out of it. The answer is.........

All the profit that we made will be all going to the Bass 'treasure box' and hope that we can get some money from the 'box' for a Solat Hajat gathering maybe during the study break (week 13). The exact date,venue and food menu is yet to be announced :)

We, the second year BASS-ians, are going to host a Bruneian food stall: Garai Tekidum (a name made up by none other than the always cheerful, Nabila Massuni) in the upcoming Malaysian Pasar Malam event.

The details of the event are as follow:

Venue : Outside of the Roundhouse, UNSW

Everyone is welcome to stopover and of course to taste, try, buy (or rather buy, try, taste? xP) our enthusiastically made especially for the event-Bruneian food which we guarantee will fulfill everyone’s Tais Liur since Brunei’s ever reliable Nasi Katok is on the menu, just please don’t go expecting Brunei prices! ;)

The deliciously devine Nasi katok will be spiced up with a special sweet sambal by Azimah JJ. You will spend days salivating over her savoury sambal.

On Wednesday the 27th of April 2011, Ms. Idariani Damit, Second Secretary, High Commission of Brunei Darussalam in Australia paid a visit to Sydney to meet with some BASS members. The rendezvous, at It's time for Thai restaurant at Kingsford, was held to update the latest BASS members' list with 12 members attending the dinner. A special thank you to Ms. Idariani for her visit.

Anyone up for a road trip this Easter break? We’re planning a 2 days trip to Hunter Valley and Port Stephens which is located north of Sydney. The purpose of this trip is to relax, sightseeing, enjoy the view at these two locations and explore new places. We would also be stopping at some suburbs in Sydney such as Bankstown, Lakemba and Homebush.

Hunter Valley (mostly sightseeing):

Famous for its award-winning wines and historic towns

Port Stephens (Dolphin watching/Sea Cruise/Sand-boarding):

I know that assignments and reports are starting to stress your mind out but don't worry, we have the solution.....which is...always eat vitamin C selalu..:p Anyway, we are here to invite you guys for a BBQ gathering that might help your mind to relax and have fun for maybe half a day only. Also, we will be having a doa selamat and doa tolak bala to ensure our safety for this year.

Details for the BBQ are as follows:

Place: Coogee Beach.
Time: 8.30 am, Saturday, 19th March 2011.
Activities: Games, outdoor, board games, mingles, apa saja la, janji ok2. :D also, maybe some discussion on BASS's structure.

Foods: The Village Boys will utilize the BASS kaching ($$) to buy chickens and other stuffs for BBQ. However, we are more glad if any of you will also bring some foods and especially drinks or keropok ka..hehe.

Also, we are gonna have gold coin donation to increase the BASS cash flow..

You might find this one interesting. The Tell Ya Story Australian Photography Competition is open to Bruneians who are currently studying/ working/ are former students of Australia. The closing date of this competition has been extended to 31st Jan 2011 which is 12 days away from today. The details of the competition can be found below. Good luck :)

The ‘Tell Ya Story’ Australian Photography Competition is an opportunity to document your memories and time in Australia, through photographs!!

Whatever your experience in Australia, we want to see your photos and hear the story behind them!! We are not looking for the best photo in terms of photographic quality but the photo that most captures the essence of student’s time in Australia!!

RULES & REGULATIONS

The competition is open to the Brunei – Australian Alumni Community and any non-member Bruneians that are currently studying or working in Australia, or are former students who have returned to Brunei.

Entries submitted must be relevant to the theme and judging will be based on the most relevant entry to the theme rather than the most ‘photogenic’ photo. Entries will be judged on the basis of creativity in relating to their experience in Australia.
Entries submitted must be in both print (8″ x 12″) and digital raw or jpeg format (at least 3,000pixels), either in black and white or colour.
Entry to the competition is FREE of charge and each participant can submit up to 4 entries.
Prizes will be awarded to TOP 5 best photos and include digital cameras, external hard drive and other great prizes.
Entries submitted must be a single work of original material taken by the participant for the purpose of the competition and must not have been used or published before.
All entris submitted (winning and non-winning) shall become the property of the B-AAA and Australian High Commission. By entering the competition, participants agree to have their submitted photos used by the B-AAA and Australian High Commission for any publicity purposes without fees or other form of compensation.
The organiser is not responsible for any lost or damaged entries.
The judges’ decision is final.

Another update on BruONZ Badminton

Salam and Hi again,

I've received an update from the organisers. The time for badminton has been changed and it will start at 9am on Friday, 21st of January which will start at the same time as the netball event. They said that the men's category will start at the morning and will continue after the friday prayers whereas the women's category will be in the afternoon.

Just for your information, the Sydney badminton team consists of 3 mens doubles and 3 mens singles. GO SYDNEY! haha

there is an update I just received from the organisers. They've changed the badminton event to include all events! Which are:

1. Men's singles
2. Men's doubles
3. Women's singles
4. Women's doubles
5. Mixed doubles

It's $5 per person per category. So if a person joins both men's singles and doubles its $10 altogether for that person. So apa lagi, JOINNNN! hahah inbox me or text or call me at 8882156

Salam and Hi everyone,

Below is the summary of the updates/new information we received from the BruONZ committee during the meeting just now:

- Deadline for registration and payment of the sports is on the 16^th of this month which is this coming Sunday

- The dinner reception is as mentioned before which is at Sutra Hall, Rizqun International Hotel for which the ticket would cost $20 per person

- The committee would need/prefer the payment for the dinner reception to be made by the 23^rd of this month

- As usual, they require each states to give a performance which would last for a maximum of 5 minutes

- They also need volunteers (2 people or more from each states) for the events which would include all the events (futsal, badminton, netball, dinner reception)

- New rule on futsal which allows import players so that the total number of teams would reach at least 10

Things we need to sort out for now which is of the highest importance:

- List of people joining each of the events and payments to the focal points (TOP PRIORITY)

- Looking to have the final list and payments by Friday or Saturday (as some would be in KB) (Maybe we could pay for them first?)

Other info:

- I think the volunteers for futsal mcm jadi referee n stuff n others, especially the dinner reception, would be informed to us by the committee at a later date

- Any questions or comments or such, do feel free to approach any of us or the ketua kampong or myself

Salam everyone,

enjoying the holidays so far? Or is it "too long" and you don't know what activities you should do? Don't fret, BruONZ is back!

As per the previous two years, this year's BruONZ event will include sports and a dinner reception. The sports event will include netball, futsal and badminton!

In this event, states will go head-to-head which would be based on a "points system" in which each states would gain points from the respective sports. The final state with the highest points gained would be crowned the champ!

So with this, lets make Sydney proud! Come and join the events! Do check BASS's facebook and blog regularly as we will update them as we get closer to the event. We will be meeting up soon to discuss how BASS will approach the event. Updates will be made as they come along. Below are some info on the events:

Salam guys and girls,

as you may or may not know tomorrow we will be having a solat hajat for the upcoming exam. Insyaallah, with our prayers and with our hard work we will be able to get through the exams with flying colours. The details are as below:

Where? Village Boys' Apartment (Apartment yea not Old Tote)
Time? 4:00 pm

We will be meeting here at 4:00 pm and around 4:20+ pm we will be having solat asar berjemaah and would be followed by solat hajat. The reason for this having it at 4 rather than at night is for safety reasons.

Also, we would just be having a pot-luck hi tea. So yea, if you have any snacks or finger foods to bring, just bring em yea. We would be supplying the tea =p haha Also if can just tell us what you guys will be bringing.

Indomie banned in Taiwan updated

Taiwanese authorities on Friday, October 7, 2010, reported that Indomie sold in their country contains two preservatives that are prohibited, namely methyl p-hydroxybenzoate and benzoic acid. Two elements should only be used to make cosmetics.[Click here for video]

However,

Singapore :

Singapore's Agri Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) said tests carried out have shown that the "Indomie" instant noodles in Singapore don't contain the chemical preservative, Para-hydroxy Benzoates.

Malaysia:

The Indomie instant noodles sold in Malaysia are safe for consumption, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Wednesday.

Hongkong:

"The indomie noodles are safe to eat and they entered the Hongkong market via Legal import channels" .

[ they claimed : The poisoned products found in Taiwan are suspected of being imported in illegal ways"]

Thank you for your email dated 15/10/2010, concerning recent media reports in regards to Indomie Noodles.

The NSW Food Authority is aware of these reports & we have been working with Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) in this regard. FSANZ have advised us that Indomie (Australia) have confirmed that Indomie instant noodles that are imported into Australia - donot include the preservative -218 (methyl p-hydroxybenzoate) in the soy sauce. Therefore it is unlikely that the products found in Taiwan are available for sale in Australia.

Why we have to care about this news?

Increase in interest rate means that you have to pay more for your weekly/monthly rent . It was reported that every 0.25% increase in interest rate will add another $50 to the monthly cost of an average mortgage.

“Australian mortgage holders are already paying about $300 more per month in repayments than they were a year ago. “

The bad news is that, it is predicted that Central Bank of Australia is going to raise the rate soon.

Australia’ Inflation rate for June 2010 is at 3.1% , the highest in more than a year. In simple word, you can say that if you have $1,000 a year ago, its value has dropped to $969 by now…

So recalculate, rebudget and review your financial to ensure you are ready and prepare for it.

Activities: Makan-makan, bermaaf-maafan and have fun with remembrance to Allah swt. We may have solat jemaah Isya, so do bring tikar solat. :)

MORE Bruneians will be joining Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd (BSP), following the signing of contracts between 35 top students and BSP yesterday, which bond them to serve the company after they complete their studies.

Another four BSP scholars were each awarded a Lenovo netbook for scoring first-class honours in their respective degree courses ranging from Chemical to Mechanical Engineering.

Hj Zainal Abidin Hj Mohd Ali, BSP deputy managing director, expressed his happiness at having more Bruneians joining the company, and said that it was in line with His Majesty's efforts to develop the Sultanate's human resource capabilities.

The BSP exec said the number of Bruneians now working for BSP accounted for about 90 per cent of its workforce.

He reminded the scholars that continuous learning is a BSP creed and also urged the students to uphold the good name of Brunei by observing good behaviour and becoming a good ambassador for the country.

The scholars were accepted into various courses, ranging from physics, geology, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics and petroleum engineering.

Among the scholars who returned home with first-class honour was Lim Jin Yang in Masters in Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge.

Lim said he had received a scholarship from his university, and will be returning to Cambridge end of this month to pursue his PhD before returning to Brunei to work with BSP.

Asked if BSP was his first choice when it comes to scholarship, the 22-year-old answer was "Yes".

"I think there is no better company in Brunei that can let me to put my studies into practice compared to BSP," said the scholar who was a student at Chung Hwa Middle School Bandar Seri Begawan before doing his International Baccalaureate with International School Brunei (ISB). "I could have got other scholarships, and one obvious choice would be with the Ministry of Education, but I think BSP will let me excel in the field of my studies."

Besides playing the violin and joining in activities of the Buddhist Society, Lim also founded the Brunei Society at his university.

"There are very few people applying for Cambridge in Brunei, and we want to encourage more applications from our fellow countrymen," he added.

Salam everyone,

It has been a week or so since we started our fast in this holy month of Ramadhan here in Sydney. Hope no one had accidentally or "accidentally" drank water when fasting. Hahah. Anyhow, as always we will be having a Sungkai Gathering this Sunday, 22nd August 2010. This POTLUCK gathering will also include Maghrib prayers berjemaah and also Isyak and Terawih prayers if the majority would be willing to join. The details are as below:

Place? Old Tote and the Village Boys' apartment
When? Sunday, 22nd August 2010

The itinerary for that day would be:

Guests arriving at Old Tote at around 4:45 p.m. to put the food and drinks there
Those concerned will move to the apartment around 5:20 p.m. where we will break our fast with dates (kurma) and drinks then have our Maghrib prayers berjemaah
After Maghrib prayers, we will move back to Old Tote for the feast
Optional - Isyak prayers, 8 rakaat Terawih with witir. This part here is totally optional and depends entirely on the majority. The options are:-

We move back to the apartment and have our Isyak prayers along with 8 rakaats of Terawih and 1 rakaat of Witir there.
We go to the Square House and have Jemaah prayers there.
Or having prayers on your own.

And please do leave your feedback with your preferred options.

As Brunei begins its first day of fasting during the month of Ramadhan, some Bruneians abroad, mostly students, are facing extra challenges in other countries and communities.

However, Amir Razak, 30, currently residing in Perth, Australia says that it gets easier with each passing year. "After living here for a while, each year provides an experience that helps you cope the following year," he said.

Now a full-fledged architect, he says that the first year is always the hardest for Bruneians studying abroad.

"One of the reasons it is challenging is because most of the time students in universities abroad may be living with other housemates who do not practise the same religion," he said.

"If they are not understanding enough, this will definitely make it tougher," said Amir.

"I was lucky that in my first year outside Brunei I was able to settle in with other Bruneians and the Muslim community at the mosques. They definitely helped me through it, especially the hot summers," he added.

Ahmad Tarmizi, who had studied in both the United Kingdom and Australia, agrees. He feels that it's more of a privilege to be fasting in Brunei after his stints abroad. "Not only are you in a community which understands and takes into consideration your fasting, but there are other activities and different things that you can focus on," he said.

He especially feels that functions like tarawih prayers and the tadarus really add to Ramadhan. "It's not like other days in the year, at night in and around the mosques. There are more people, there is a uniqueness about it and those who have been abroad during puasa (fasting month) will testify to it," he added.

Ak Muhammad Abu Zahrin Pg Hj Damit, a student at University of New South Wales (UNSW), said that since there was an adequate Muslim population where they live and study, they could perform tarawih and Iftar functions frequently at the university.He agreed that fasting abroad has never been the same as in Brunei.

"Brunei has this special religious environment during Ramadhan and we are missing it. Nevertheless, what's important is fasting for Allah (SWT) and to have more self-control during this month, no matter where we are," he said.

When asked if he has had any problems with foreigners during the holy month, Ak Muhammad Abu Zahrin, who is the leader of Bruneians Around Sydney Society (BASS) said, he has not encountered any problems so far.

For Nur Faezah Hj Mohamad Aus, 23, who is undergoing her Masters in Diplomacy at the University of Birmingham, among the differences in fasting in the UK and in Brunei, "is the sense of community".

"In Brunei, being an Islamic country, most of the people around you are fasting, whereas here in the UK, with such a diversity of individuals of race and religion, only a handful of UK residents are fasting," she said.

Nur Faezah was also quick to point out the duration of the fast as another challenge for students abroad. "As it's summertime now in the UK with more daylight hours, our sungkai times are as late as 9pm," she added.

She said apart from missing home cooking, she missed performing the 'tarawih' prayers at Jerudong Mosque.

"However I do plan to join tarawih prayers at one of the Birmingham local mosques," said Nur Faezah.

Ak Hadee Pg Yasfadillah in his last year at UNSW as a petroleum engineering student said: "Being a student, it's quite hard to prepare food on your own for sungkai and sahur due to the time and available resources."

He added: "In Brunei, halal food is plentiful and cheaper. Also when with family, food is normally prepared and shared."

"Fasting in Sydney is more challenging which is better in some ways as you are 'not following the crowd' but you are fasting for yourself and Allah (SWT). And with the greater temptation here... You can easily skip fasting in a non-Muslim country, so it's really a test of will power."

He related that in the four years he was there, fasting had not been a problem with foreigners other than them eating in public which is tolerable.

Ak Hadee said, "The only drawback is the availability of halal food."

He said: "For sahur, I would just take a quick sip of water or small supper. During sungkai, I would either cook at home or eat out with friends."

One way to beat the feeling of homesickness, is by being part of a student society.

"It helps tremendously when you're an international student, a family away from home," she said. "Pooling our cooking skills also helps in getting rid of that homesickness and cravings for Malay food!" she exclaimed.

A third-year petroleum engineering student at UNSW, Ak Muhammad Amal Nur Qasman Pg Metussin also said that "The environment is different because you see people eating in front of you while in Brunei you won't see this. Also, in Brunei, you would be able to feel the Ramadhan suasana (environment)."

The UNSW student further said he feels good, motivated and energetic during this month and it feels livelier compared to other months.
